Eskom has entered into a technical cooperation agreement with Korea Plant Service & Engineering Co (KEPCO KPS) to improve the performance of its ageing power stations through research, consulting and skills exchange.
The non-commercial agreement outlines the following focus areas:
- Strategic cooperation on critical spares (including remanufacturing and retrofitting of obsolete components)
- Technical research and consulting to improve asset performance
- Digitalisation through artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and data analytics
- Support for green and smart research and development and circular economy practices
- Human capital exchange programme focused on skills development and training
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be implemented by Eskom’s Research, Testing & Development business unit, which oversees technology innovation, emissions management and low-carbon transition planning.
KEPCO KPS has provided maintenance services for 24 nuclear reactors in South Korea since 1978 and supports a broad range of thermal and gas power facilities in over 34 countries, including the United States, Japan and China.
“By combining our expertise and embracing international best practices in engineering and maintenance, we aim to accelerate innovation and build a more resilient, sustainable energy future for South Africa,” says Eskom’s Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane.
