Commercial operations at the first 155 MW phase of Seriti Green’s Ummbila Emoyeni wind energy development near Bethal, Mpumalanga, are due to commence on July 31.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will officiate the commencement of operations at the facility, according to The Presidency.
The wind farm is part of Seriti Green’s planned 900 MW Ummbila Emoyeni renewable energy programme. Electricity generated by the project will be transported through Eskom’s network to supply Seriti Resources’ mining operations.
The first phase comprises 25 wind turbines connected through the Vunumoya main transmission substation near Bethal. The privately constructed substation was handed over to Eskom in November 2025 and provides the initial 155 MW grid-injection capacity with provision for the wider renewable energy programme.
Seriti Green seeks trading licence
Additionally, Seriti Green Energy is seeking regulatory approval to buy electricity from a generator in Mpumalanga and sell it to a customer in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality using Eskom’s transmission and distribution network.
The generator and customer are not identified in the licence application notice published on July 16. The notice also does not disclose the contracted capacity or other details of the proposed supply arrangement.
NERSA will hold a public hearing on the application on September 10. Interested parties have until August 15 to submit written objections.
