Phelan Green Group has signed a 200 MW electrolyser supply agreement with Sungrow Hydrogen for its planned electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) production facility at Saldanha Bay.
The agreement is the first tranche of a planned 800 MW electrolyser deployment for the project, which is being developed at Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape. According to the company, construction is expected to begin in September 2026.
The project intends to produce eSAF using renewable electricity generated from a combination of solar, wind and battery storage infrastructure together with water and captured biogenic carbon dioxide.
Phelan Green said the project is being designed to supply lower-carbon aviation fuel to international markets as tighter decarbonisation regulations drive demand for sustainable aviation fuel, particularly in Europe.
The initial 200 MW phase is expected to support future expansion to 800 MW.
Blair Phelan, Managing Director of Phelan Green Group, said the deployment will provide the scale required to advance the Saldanha Bay project toward construction. The facility is expected to produce 35 000 t of eSAF a year for export to regulated international markets.
