NERSA publishes first 2025/26 municipal tariff applications for comment

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has published the first batch of municipal electricity tariff applications for the 2025/26 financial year, triggering the start of a public consultation process.

Nine municipalities have submitted applications to date: City of Mbombela, Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme, Matjhabeng, Msukaligwa, Overstrand, Saldanha Bay, Senqu, Umsobomvu and Witzenberg. Additional applications from other municipalities are expected in the coming weeks as the deadline for submission approaches.

In a statement released this week, NERSA confirmed that all submitted applications will be available on its website and social media platforms for review. Stakeholders are invited to submit written comments by May 25 to municcomments@nersa.org.za.

“NERSA’s decision will be made taking into account written comments from affected stakeholders and analysis performed by NERSA officials,” the regulator said.

The annual municipal tariff adjustment process is a key mechanism through which local authorities apply to vary electricity charges for the upcoming financial year. The publication of applications allows customers and interested parties to assess proposed changes – particularly where above-guideline increases are requested – and provide input before NERSA finalises approvals.
