NERSA opens public comment on municipal tariff applications for 2026/27

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has published municipal electricity tariff applications for the 2026/27 financial year, opening a public consultation process ahead of final determinations.

The notice sets out the timetable for stakeholder engagement with written comments invited before final tariff decisions are made. Approved tariffs are expected to be implemented from July 1.

The publication marks the next step in the municipal tariff-setting process following the recent approval of Eskom’s bulk electricity tariff increase for 2026/27. According to NERSA, municipal tariff applications are assessed based on bulk electricity costs as well as distribution-related expenses including operations, maintenance and network costs.

NERSA has indicated that municipal tariff adjustments are influenced by Eskom’s approved increases and cost-reflective requirements within distribution systems. As a result, the application process provides visibility of proposed electricity tariffs for end users, including commercial and industrial customers supplied at municipal level.
