Eskom has deployed its first fleet of 20 electric vehicles (EVs) – a mix of light delivery units and small trucks – to be used in the utility’s Distribution and Generation Divisions.

This follows the utility’s August 2024 pilot launch, which focused on the procurement of the EVs as well as the installation of 10 charging stations across five sites to support its internal fleet. The initial charging sites are located in Midrand, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Rustenburg and Mbombela.

Eskom plans to expand the network significantly, with 55 public EV charging stations to be rolled out over the next two years, the utility said in a statement.

Eskom’s Distribution Division, which has the largest vehicle footprint within the utility, is targeting full fleet electrification by 2035. “Through e-mobility, we are cutting emissions, boosting innovation and showing how sustainable energy solutions can create real benefits for communities and the economy,” says Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane.
