CIGRE Paris session: Rethinking overhead line transmission in Southern Africa

The integration of renewable energy into transmission networks presents technical challenges, particularly for long-distance power transfer. At the 2024 CIGRE Paris Session, Study Committee B2 explored solutions such as high-temperature low-sag conductors, innovative tower designs and real-time weather data for dynamic line rating. Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven image analysis and new sensor technologies are also advancing asset management and maintenance efficiency.
