South Africa’s efforts to open its electricity market to competition are gaining traction but structural inefficiencies, policy uncertainty and grid constraints continue to stall reform.

This was emphasised by energy leaders during a panel discussion focusing on navigating the complexities of wholesale markets at Enlit Africa 2025 in Cape Town from May 20-22.
