The FACTS behind grid stability in the renewable era

The integration of non-linear and electronically switched devices in distribution networks, coupled with the rise of utility-scale and small-scale renewable energy systems, contributes to growing challenges in grid stability and power quality. Addressing these issues requires the use of compensation technologies – particularly flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices – to enhance network performance. Originally developed for transmission networks, these devices are also finding application in distribution systems.
