South Africa’s renewable energy landscape has reached a new milestone with the permitting of the Carissa wind energy facility in the Western Cape.
Hive Hydrogen has confirmed that Carissa, near Beaufort West, has received environmental authorisation from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. The approval makes Carissa the largest permitted wind project in the country with planned capacity of 1 000 MW generated from 154 wind turbines. The facility will supply renewable power to Hive Hydrogen’s Coega green ammonia project in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“This milestone is the result of exceptional teamwork and demonstrates how government and private stakeholders can work together to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy,” says Thulani Gcabashe, Chairman of Hive Hydrogen South Africa.
With environmental clearance now secured, the project will move into the front-end engineering design stage. Construction is targeted to begin in early 2027 with commissioning scheduled for December 2029.
