The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) is preparing to launch a centre of excellence aimed at strengthening research co-ordination, supporting innovation and advancing South Africa’s green industrialisation objectives.
The initiative was referenced during a panel discussion on industrialisation and innovation at the third annual SANEDI energy conference where speakers emphasised the importance of structured innovation hubs to translate research into economic development.
SANEDI General Manager for Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Faith Mkhacawa said the organisation’s credibility is grounded in verifiable projects and research-backed implementation.
“Regulatory frameworks such as energy performance standards have stimulated new skills development and market growth,” Mkhacawa said. “This shows how structured policy support can drive innovation into the economy.”
During a separate media briefing, SANEDI CEO Titus Mathe said the proposed centre of excellence will strengthen co-ordination across publicly funded energy research initiatives.
According to Mathe, the centre will aim to prevent duplication of research efforts while helping innovations progress beyond pilot stages towards scalable deployment.
“Research must move past the testing phase and become spatially and commercially relevant,” he said.
Panellists at the conference also emphasised the importance of strong institutions and evidence-based planning to sustain long-term energy initiatives.
Presidential Climate Commission Executive Director Deborah Modise said technocratic institutions play an important role in maintaining continuity in energy programmes beyond leadership cycles.
Meanwhile, UNIDO National Programme Co-ordinator Mchenge Nyoka highlighted the need for improved testing, certification and technology transfer frameworks to support local manufacturers’ access to international markets.
Panellists said the centre is expected to function as a co-ordination and knowledge hub linking research institutions, industry and government departments.
