SA charts five-year path to energy reform

The Department of Electricity and Energy has detailed its five-year strategic plan to overhaul South Africa’s energy sector, focusing on expanding private-sector participation, scaling renewable energy and reforming market structures.

According to its 2024-2029 strategic plan and 2025/26 annual performance plan, the Department of Electricity and Energy is aiming to increase electricity procured from independent power producers from 14% to 40% within five years.
