Release advances mine power supply with 21 MW solar lease

Release, a modular solution offered by Scatec ASA, has signed a seven-year leasing agreement with Tshukudu Metals Botswana for a 21 MW solar power plant at Motheo Copper Operations near Ghanzi, Botswana.

The agreement, signed on February 12, builds on Scatec’s established presence in Botswana following the commissioning of its 120 MW solar portfolio in the country.

Project implementation is expected to commence shortly with operation targeted to begin by the end of 2026. Once operational, the plant is expected to generate approximately 40 GWh annually and cover about 30% of Motheo’s electricity demand.

The project will supply renewable energy to Sandfire Resources’ copper-producing asset at Motheo and support its decarbonisation objectives, Release says.

“Bringing this solution to Botswana for the first time, in partnership with the Motheo mining operation, is a major milestone for our company,” says Hans Olav Kvalvaag, CEO of Release.
