New renewable energy company launched with 2,7 GW portfolio

A new renewable energy company, Anthem, was officially launched on September 22, bringing 2,7 GW of renewable energy capacity under a single platform. The company combines the operations of African Clean Energy Developments (ACED) and EIMS Africa, which are now managed through the AIIM IDEAS Fund.

Although Anthem is newly established, its projects have been developed and operated for more than a decade through ACED and EIMS Africa. These include wind, solar PV and hydroelectric plants across five provinces of South Africa.

According to Anthem CEO James Cumming, the company now represents about 15% of South Africa’s renewable energy market share. Its secured portfolio totals 2,7 GW, comprising:

  • 17 operational projects generating 1,1 GW
  • Four projects under construction totalling 445 MW
  • Three projects in financial close totalling 1,2 GW

The company supplies electricity to Eskom, medium- and large-scale private power users, traders and aggregators.
