The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has announced a series of public hearings on a proposed wholesale electricity pricing methodology, marking another step in South Africa’s ongoing electricity market reform process.
According to the regulator, the hearings will focus on the proposed wholesale electricity price methodology, which is intended to support the development of a competitive electricity market structure in South Africa.
The hearings come as government and industry continue preparations for the introduction of the South African Wholesale Electricity Market, which is expected to expand participation by electricity traders, independent power producers, municipalities and large electricity consumers.
NERSA said the methodology is part of the broader regulatory framework required to support wholesale electricity trading and market settlement arrangements in the evolving electricity sector.
The development of a wholesale pricing framework is expected to influence future electricity trading models, wheeling arrangements, network cost allocation and market-based electricity transactions.
Public hearings are scheduled to take place in several provinces during May and June 2026 with physical and virtual participation options available.
According to the notice, hearings will be held in:
- Cape Town on May 26
- Durban on May 28
- Gqeberha on June 2
- Johannesburg on June 4
- Pretoria on June 6
NERSA encouraged interested and affected stakeholders to register and submit comments within the prescribed timelines.
