NECSA and EWSETA sign agreement to boost nuclear energy training

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) and the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support skills development in South Africa’s nuclear energy sector.

The MoU was signed during a visit by EWSETA CEO Mpho Mookapele to the NECSA Learning Academy in July 2025. “The agreement is part of efforts to align technical training with national energy and industrial development priorities,” said NECSA CEO Loyiso Tyabashe.

Key components of the partnership include:

  • Joint mapping of current and anticipated skills needs in nuclear engineering, reactor operations, radiation protection and related fields.
  • Development of youth-focused and SME-linked training programmes to support early-career pathways.
  • Stronger linkages with universities and industry to support curriculum development, research and technology transfer.

The NECSA Learning Academy currently hosts the Radiation Protection Training Centre, which offers EWSETA-accredited programmes in radiation safety and nuclear compliance. Training spans technician-level monitoring roles, specialised radiation protection officers and graduate mentorship programmes.
