The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have entered into a research collaboration to strengthen nuclear research and energy innovation efforts.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last week establishes a framework for the two state-owned organisations to combine research and technology development initiatives, particularly in nuclear applications and energy systems.
Necsa operates the SAFARI-1 research reactor and is responsible for developing nuclear technologies in South Africa. The CSIR leads scientific and industrial research with applications in energy, infrastructure and manufacturing.
The MoU identifies collaboration areas including modernisation of the energy sector, development of circular economy technologies and innovation in health and industrial systems. Both parties have also committed to developing technical skills and sharing best practices in technology piloting, commercialisation and market studies.
“It is crucial that research and its outcomes are for societal benefit,” said Necsa Group CEO Loyiso Tyabashe. “I see this collaboration helping to build on best practices from both entities in accelerating this endeavour so that we have a positive socio-economic impact.”
