South Africa’s electricity supply is expected to continue to fall well below demand until additional reliable generation capacity is connected to the grid. At present, the network cannot meet more than about 22 000 MW of load, resulting in Stage 6 load shedding. The minister of electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, says the average load peaks at around 28 000 MW, well below the anticipated 32 000 MW, but that so many generators are offline for planned maintenance or because of breakdowns, Stage 6 load shedding (which removes 6000 MW of load from the network) has to be imposed to prevent a total system collapse.
