KwaZulu-Natal’s estimated electricity demand is about 6 700 MW with a supply shortfall of between 400 MW and 470 MW, according to Deputy Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Nomalungelo Gina during the KwaZulu-Natal Energy Indaba on March 18.
Gina said the supply gap reflects the difference between available electricity and current demand in the province.
Government has set a target to develop 5 000 MW of renewable energy capacity in KwaZulu-Natal by 2030 as part of plans to increase the country’s electricity generation capacity, she added.
Gina presented the figures as part of an overview of the province’s energy position and planned capacity development.
