Truck and trailer body builder Serco has begun exporting surplus solar electricity from its Cape Town manufacturing facility to the City of Cape Town’s municipal grid after expanding its photovoltaic system and receiving approval for grid-tied generation.
The company said the facility has been producing more electricity than it consumes during the summer months with excess generation fed into the municipal network since October 2025.
According to Serco, the system generated an average surplus of 7 008 kWh per month between October 2025 and February 2026.
The solar installation at the Cape Town facility was originally commissioned at the end of 2023 with system capacity increased recently to enable electricity exports to the grid.
Renewable energy initiatives are also being implemented at other operations in Durban and Johannesburg where facilities use solar systems to supplement their manufacturing energy requirements, the company added.
