Government to announce major nuclear expansion plans

South Africa is preparing to launch a major new nuclear build programme aimed at strengthening long-term energy security and industrial growth.

Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa signalled the move during the G20 Nuclear Energy Ministerial Conference in Durban, saying details would be announced “post-Cabinet” this week.

“Our ambition is to build a new job programme of at least initially the size of 5 000 MW,” he said, adding that the expansion will boost skills development and localisation.

Ramokgopa said the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation will play a central role and highlighted the potential of small modular reactors for rapid deployment and powering emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
