The Energy Availability Factor of Eskom (EAF) has reached 70% for the first time since August 2021.

This is according to the Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, who addressed the public from Kusile Power Station on May 13 regarding the implementation of the Energy Access Plan. He said Eskom’s EAF stood at 70,78%.

Ramokgopa identified Kusile, Lethabo, Majuba, Matla and Medupi power stations as consistently performing power stations “carrying the majority of the weight” as Eskom worked to fix other power stations.

The minister acknowledged that while improvement had been made, significant progress was still needed to address the energy crisis.

“Some power stations, such as Majuba and Amandla, have an EAF between 50% and 60%. We are aiming for all power stations to have an EAF above 65% for the weight to be equitably distributed,” said Ramokgopa.

The minister also addressed the importance of failing municipal distribution infrastructure.

“It is important that we address the issue of illegal connection and invest in the maintenance of municipal infrastructure. There are some communities that, despite not having load shedding, have still been sitting in the dark for sustained periods,” said Ramokgopa. 

Ramokgopa noted the financial constraints faced by municipalities. “We are engaging with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and municipalities to find the best way out of this situation,” he said.
