Edward appointed to lead IPP Office into new phase

The Department of Electricity and Energy has appointed Precious Mmabakwena Edward as Head of the Independent Power Producers Office (IPPO).

Her appointment comes as the IPPO marks its 15th year since establishment. The office, which has overseen large-scale renewable procurement since 2010, is expected to evolve into a more inclusive institution under Edward’s leadership, the department said. Priorities include advancing transformation and skills development, driving local manufacturing through the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan, and introducing new procurement models to support security of supply and affordability.

Edward’s appointment follows the departure of Tshifhiwa Bernard Magoro, who stepped down on April 30 after nearly five years as head of the IPPO. Elsa Strydom, an executive at the agency, has served as interim head in the months since.

The department noted that Edward’s technical, commercial and legal background equips her to guide the IPPO through the next phase of procurement. Her leadership will be central as government pursues its 2025-2030 strategic goals of universal electricity access, industrialisation and the Just Energy Transition.

Edward brings nearly 20 years of experience in South Africa’s power sector, spanning fossil fuels and renewable energy.
