Construction and infrastructure company Concor has taken on its first full balance of plant contract at the TotalEnergies Renewables De Aar 2 South wind energy facility in the Northern Cape.
The 25-turbine, 5 473 hectare project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2026 with Concor taking responsibility for the civil and electrical scopes under its own management, the company says.
Concor’s scope includes 54 km of gravel roads, realignment of 15 km of district road to handle turbine components and 41 km of new internal access roads. “Turbine foundations feature a central pit design to address local geological challenges with 600 m³ of concrete placed in each base using on-site batching plants. Sensors embedded in the foundations monitor curing temperatures to avoid cracking,” Concor says.
Electrical works cover 13 km of 33 kV cabling, an 80 km overhead line network, a new 132 kV substation with a 165 MVA transformer and an Eskom switching station connecting the project to the transmission grid.
“By taking full ownership of the engineering and construction elements, we are reducing interfaces, improving accountability and de-risking the process for our clients,” says Stephan Venter, Contract Director at Concor.
