City Power reports R1bn revenue recovery through billing and metering interventions

City Power reports that more than R1 billion in revenue has been recovered under its Financial Sustainability Programme as part of a broader drive to reach R2,9 billion by the end of the financial year in June.

The revenue recovery is part of the utility’s Gross Margin Turnaround Project implemented in July last year. According to City Power, the intervention targets historical billing gaps, systemic discrepancies and weaknesses in the billing value chain.

The programme includes the regularisation and audit of 44 000 meters alongside changes to revenue management processes.

“This progress comes at a critical time. The transition has placed the utility at the centre of revenue management, customer account verification and billing accuracy,” said City Power Chief Commercial Officer Thamsanqa Mathiso.

City Power stated that approximately R1,025 billion in revenue has been enhanced through focused interventions across key revenue streams including billing corrections, metering audits, tariff alignment processes and account verifications across various customer categories.

The utility identified issues such as incorrectly programmed meters, illegal connections, unbilled accounts and technical discrepancies within the billing system as factors contributing to historical revenue losses.

According to City Power, the University of Johannesburg campus in Soweto settled R33 million under the programme and Caltex settled R5 million.

The utility said correcting systemic billing gaps and improving data integrity is intended to stabilise cash flow and support reinvestment into network maintenance, refurbishment and infrastructure upgrades.

City Power aims to reach the full R2,9 billion recovery target by the end of the financial year.
