SolarAfrica acquires Nyakallo solar and storage project in Limpopo

SolarAfrica has entered into an agreement to acquire the Nyakallo solar project from Norsk Renewables with the companies set to jointly advance the utility-scale solar and battery storage development towards financial close and construction.

Located in Limpopo, the Nyakallo project is expected to deliver grid-connected renewable electricity to commercial and industrial (C&I) customers from the second half of 2028.

Originally developed by Norsk Renewables with development support from Green Soll, the project has already progressed through several early-stage milestones, including grid connection approvals, permitting and initial design work.

Under the agreement, SolarAfrica will act as the long-term owner and funding sponsor of the project while Norsk Renewables will continue supporting development, financing preparation and commercialisation activities.

According to the companies, the project is positioned within one of Eskom’s key transmission corridors enabling connection into existing grid infrastructure without depending on major transmission expansion upgrades.

The companies say this could provide a strategic advantage as transmission constraints continue to delay renewable energy projects across parts of South Africa.

Financial close is anticipated within the next 12 months with power evacuation targeted for the second half of 2028.

The project is expected to use a mixed offtake structure involving large anchor customers and energy traders, says David McDonald, CEO of SolarAfrica.

“This model enables greater flexibility in how businesses procure electricity, extending access beyond traditional long-term power purchase agreements and opening the market to a wider range of C&I users,” he says.

The project will also include a battery energy storage system allowing solar energy generated during the day to be stored for use outside peak production periods.
