The RustMo1 Solar Project, the first renewable energy project developed under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) is celebrating ten years of clean energy production.
The 7 MW power plant has been generating around 12,5 million kWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power several thousand low-income homes. The project was developed by Momentous Energy and constructed and operated by JUWI Renewable Energies South Africa.
The RustMo1 Solar Project, South Africa's pioneering utility-scale clean energy project, celebrates a decade of successful operation and community impact. A beacon of success in private-public partnerships, the project has blazed a trail in collaboration, providing a proven model for large renewables procurement projects. With 17% of project dividends supporting a community development trust and a strong emphasis on skills development and women’s empowerment, the project exemplifies the critical role of renewable energy projects in social upliftment.
RustMo1 was the first independent power producer, as part of the REIPPPP initiative, to reach financial close in 2012 and commercial operations in 2013. RustMo1 Solar Farm is situated in the Rustenburg area, North West Province, South Africa. RustMo1 has contributed to many improvements to the local energy infrastructure through uninterrupted power generation during daylight hours, reducing the carbon footprint and promoting socio-economic development in the local area.
