SGB-Smit Power Matla proudly flies the flag for South African transformer manufacturing, securing a multi-million-dollar contract to supply hundreds of transformers for the US market. For the first time in history, a South African transformer OEM is designing, manufacturing, and supplying distribution transformers to a utility customer in the US market. To achieve this milestone, the company must meet the customer's specifications and strict international quality standards. The transformers comply with the US Department of Energy (DoE), the American National Standard (ANSI) as well as the IEEE Standard.
The distribution transformers are going to be delivered in the first half of 2023 and will be installed in the utility’s network. Distribution transformers provide the final voltage transformation in the electric power distribution system, stepping down the voltage used in the distribution lines to levels used by customers.
Each unit is custom-built from standardised design elements, using consistent manufacturing processes. This flexible but well-coordinated approach ensures the highest quality of design and construction for all the company’s transformers, making the most of the valuable knowledge and experience gained over the years and the best practices developed in its factory.
This contract award demonstrates that the company has the experience, expertise, and capabilities to meet the customer's requirements. The company is excited to enter a new territory but remains strongly focused on the South African market.
