The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) registered 181 generation facilities with a combined capacity of 1 401 MW during the second quarter of the 2025/26 financial year (July-September 2025). This is an improvement from the second quarter of the previous financial year (2024/25) when 149 registration applications were processed.
Solar photovoltaic projects accounted for 175 of the 181 registrations, totalling 650 MW of capacity. Four wind projects contributed 750 MW while one biogas (0,3 MW) and one battery energy storage system (1 MW) completed the technology mix.
The total investment value of the newly registered projects is estimated at R30,78 billion with the Western Cape leading in installed capacity (872 MW) and investment (R20,77 billion). Limpopo and the Northern Cape follow at 154 MW and 150 MW respectively. Gauteng recorded the highest number of projects (67), reflecting continued uptake of small-scale and rooftop installations.
Since the inception of the registration framework in 2018, NERSA has recorded 2 236 generation facilities nationwide, representing 16 040 MW of capacity and cumulative investment of R328 billion.
NERSA said the average turnaround time for processing registration applications during the quarter improved to 10 working days – down from 12 days in the corresponding quarter of 2024/25.
