Joburg faces Eskom supply interruption threat over arrear debt

Eskom has issued a notice of intention to interrupt electricity supply to certain bulk supply points linked to the City of Johannesburg and City Power as municipal arrear debt exceeds R5,2 billion.

The utility said the City of Johannesburg and City Power currently owe R5 255 421 994 in arrears, excluding a further R1 582 093 993 due on June 5. Eskom said the notice follows repeated defaults and failure to comply with the electricity supply agreement.

The move marks a further escalation in Eskom’s efforts to recover arrear municipal electricity debt. Eskom warned that escalating municipal arrear debt undermines its operational and financial sustainability, including its ability to provide electricity at cost-reflective tariffs and maintain efficient operations.

Earlier in March, Eskom issued a Promotion of Administrative Justice Act notice against the City of Ekurhuleni, warning of similar action. The matter was later resolved after the municipality agreed to a payment arrangement covering arrear debt and current accounts.

Energize approached the City of Johannesburg and City Power for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
