Four solar photovoltaic projects licensed under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme Bid Window 7.3 will install a combined 1 049 MWdc of generating capacity to supply 890 MW of contracted capacity.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved generation licences for the four utility-scale projects.
Three of the projects are being developed by Red Rocket SA. The 278 MWdc Sculptor Energy project in Mpumalanga and the 277 MWdc Springhaas Solar Facility 1 in the Free State each have contracted capacity of 240 MW.
The 206 MWdc Springhaas Solar Facility 6, also in the Free State, has contracted capacity of 170 MW.
ENGIE’s 288 MWdc Corona Energy project in the Free State has contracted capacity of 240 MW.
The applications were assessed against NERSA’s technical, financial, economic, regulatory and legal requirements and were found to be compliant, the regulator said. “The approval of these generation licences is expected to contribute to enhancing South Africa’s electricity generation capacity.”
