Envusa Energy is preparing to bring its 520 MW Koruson 2 project cluster into commercial operation, supporting its strategy to supply renewable electricity to hard-to-abate sectors such as mining, steel and cement in Southern Africa.
The Koruson 2 cluster consists of three utility-scale projects:
- Mooi Plaats solar PV farm (240 MW) in the Northern Cape
- Umsobomvu (140 MW) and Hartebeesthoek (140 MW) wind farms in the Eastern Cape
These projects are being integrated into the grid via the newly constructed Koruson 400 kV main transmission substation.
Envusa, a 50:50 joint venture between EDF and Anglo American, aggregates generation assets across multiple sites and technologies including wind, solar and storage, and supplies power to offtakers through wheeling agreements. Envusa currently supplies Anglo American’s Southern African operations, which are targeting carbon-neutral electricity by 2040.
“Our objective now is to extend this platform further into the market and support other hard-to-abate entities in Southern Africa on their carbon neutrality journey,” said Nicole Mason, Acting CEO of Envusa Energy.
