The 97,5 MW Damlaagte PV facility near Parys in the Free State began commercial operations on August 23. The plant will operate for 20 years, supplying power to Sasol and Air Liquide under their joint renewable energy procurement programme.
Damlaagte is owned by Mainstream Renewable Power, uBuzwe Energy and the Thembelihle Trust. It is the first project to go live in the partners’ plan to secure nearly 700 MW of renewable capacity for Sasol’s Secunda operations. Mainstream developed and operates the site, which connects to the Eskom grid and is expected to produce around 270 million kWh of electricity in its first year. Construction began in November 2023.
“This year, we have achieved several milestones in renewable energy, including securing an additional 160 MW, bringing the total renewable energy secured in South Africa to more than 900 MW. We are well on track to meet our 2030 target of up to 2 GW,” says Sasol President and CEO Simon Baloyi.
