Comtest adds Fluke A-Frame fault locator to local range

Comtest has added the Fluke SmartTrace AF2082 A-Frame accessory to its local product range for locating ground faults in underground cables.

The accessory is designed for use with Fluke’s SmartTrace 2082 underground utility locator system and is compatible with the 2082T transmitter. It uses an 8 kHz signal and measures voltage gradients at ground level to guide an operator towards a cable fault.

The AF2082 is intended for de-energised fault-locating work. Its published specifications indicate a typical fault-locating capability of up to 2 MΩ although performance will depend on site conditions and the characteristics of the cable fault. “After a cable or pipe has been traced using a transmitter and receiver, the A-Frame can be used to accurately identify the exact point of a ground fault,” Comtest says.

The unit uses two probes inserted into the ground to measure the direction and strength of the signal. Its display and audio indication assist the operator in following the gradient towards the fault location.

The accessory has a 33 mm monochrome outdoor display with automatic backlight, six AA batteries and a stated battery life of up to 60 hours. It is listed with an automatic shut-off function after 15 minutes of inactivity.
