Energy Exchange of Southern Africa (EXSA) and Seriti Green have reached financial close on the 155 MW Ummbila Emoyeni wind energy project in Mpumalanga.
Structured around a 15-year power purchase agreement, EXSA will procure the full capacity for distribution to its portfolio of large corporate and industrial customers. EXSA is one of South Africa’s first licensed electricity traders – backed by Remgro and RMB.
The R5 billion project will generate approximately 525 GWh of clean energy annually and is expected to enter commercial operation by October 2027. Construction will incorporate 25 wind turbines fitted with the largest blades currently in use in South Africa, according to a statement from EXSA.
The 155 MW wind project represents the first phase of the 900 MW Ummbila Emoyeni hybrid complex, which will also incorporate solar and battery storage components.
“Reaching financial close on this project is a positive step forward for the South African renewable energy market, demonstrating the private sector’s key role in solving the energy supply gap,” says Wayne Cowie, CEO of EXSA.
