The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has published a Request For Information (RFI) in preparation for a 2500 MW nuclear new-build programme.
Given the long lead-time associated with the building of additional nuclear capacity, careful planning is needed to ensure security of energy supply for the future.
The Department says the RFI is in line with the Integrated Resource Plan 2019 which states that the Department will “Commence preparations for a nuclear build programme at a pace and scale that the country can afford because it is a no-regret option in the long term”.
The RFI will enable the Department to gain insight into the cost of the programme, possible ownership structures, cost recovery, the end user cost and sustainability of the programme.
South Africa already owns one two-unit nuclear-powered 1800 MW electricity generation plant in the Western Cape, the only one in Africa. The Department last year said it would invest in life-extension work on this plant.
