Prof. Nicolas Beukes

The minister of science and technology, Nalendi Pandor, presented a lifetime achievement award to Prof. Nicolas Beukes at the recent NSTF-South32 Awards ceremony. Prof. Beukes was recognised for his outstanding contribution to science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation in South Africa over many years.

The National Science and Technology Forum (NTSF) held a gala dinner recently to celebrate the success and achievements of a number of individuals from various fields of science and technology under 13 distinct categories. The NTSF-South32 Awards are the largest science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation awards in South Africa.

Speaking to over 600 guests at the gala dinner, the minister said that South Africa’s science mission is to create wealth and jobs thereby eradicating poverty. Its success, she says, depends on the country’s ability to develop new products, technologies and services.

Prof. Beukes is a director of the Department of Science and Technology’s/National Research Foundation’s centre for excellence for integrated mineral and energy resource analysis at the University of Johannesburg’s department of geology.
